Secretary to Tax Assessor; Planning Board; Zoning Board
This is one in a continuing series of profiles of
Southampton Township municipal employees who serve the residents of our
community in the various departments of the township.
Betty Conley was born and raised in Southampton Township, where, along with members of her family, she has been actively involved in many community projects.
Betty first started working for the township part time in 1976. At that time she served as Treasurer (until June of 1979).
She and her daughter, Amber, left Vincentown for a while, moving to Tioga County, Pennsylvania. They returned to Vincentown in 1985. Upon their return, they noted the many changes that had taken place in Southampton — transitioning from a small community of “locals” to a growing rural-suburban community. Betty was impressed by the “controlled” growth of the community, making it desirable for people who had become disenchanted by the uncontrolled growth and congestion of surrounding Burlington County communities.
Shortly after her return, Betty assumed another part-time job with the township, as Planning Board secretary (1987 to present) and currently, also as secretary for the Zoning Board.
Betty’s main function with the township is as the Tax Assessor’s secretary, a position she has held full-time since 1990.
During the past year she has been more involved with residents because of the ongoing property re-assessments coordinated by the Tax Assessor. She has fielded many of the questions of residents concerning the new Fair Market Value Assessments.
Residents who are involved in presentations to either the Planning or Zoning Boards generally receive forms, guidelines and assistance from Betty, and the members of these boards rely on her for accurate agendas and minutes of their meetings.
Generally if someone wants to know where “so and so” lives or lived, where “Hog Farm Road” or “Bed Bug Hill” is located, and who lives in that place with the “junk car” outside — they seek out or are referred to Betty and can be assured of an accurate response.
Betty is a graduate of Lenape Regional High School. She worked for the First National Bank of Vincentown before their merger with Union National Bank of Mount Holly.
Betty has been a member of the Vincentown Grange, the Burlington County Farm Fair Association and the Burlington County Chapter of the New Jersey Association of Planning and Zoning Administrators.
